Whole For The Holidays

Swiped this image from HERE.
So I'm not sure why, exactly, but it seems to me that this time of year there are a lot of babies being born.  Maybe it's the spring mating season thing?  I don't know, and I don't pretend to really care why.  The thing I do care about is that during the "holiday season", we're all ready wracked with enough insanity, before we add to it the babies.

With every pregnancy announcement and upcoming birth, those of us who call ourselves "intactivists" just get STRESSED RIGHT FREAKIN' OUT.  I swear, I have an ulcer.

Nothing says "Happy Holidays" like knowing that people you've spoken to about circumcision a dozen times (at LEAST) over the last several months, very likely just had their newly born son circumcised.  And it's not as though they didn't know the facts.  If they ignored the sea of information I gave them, the decision to cut him would have been completely based on the husband's insecurity with his own genitals.  ("What's wrong with being circumcised?  I'm circumcised!  And my son will be too!")

What really GETS to me about this time of year when it comes to circumcision is that these adults are thinking of all of the super cute little outfits they're going to buy for their son.  They're thinking of the gifts that they'll have for him under the tree.  And they'll be spending two months flipping through flyers and websites, looking for that perfect gift for themselves.  'Tis the season for giving (and receiving), right?

I have this "crazy" idea.  How about instead of worrying about which Christmas sweater you're going to buy your son, you just leave your him with the foreskin his body was meant to have, and call it even.  It'll save you $24.99, and save him a lifetime of living with your idea of what his genitals "should" look like.

How about you just forgo the circumstraint, the tearing, the screaming, the trauma...

How about you just love your son for the person he is, without thinking that his penis was made so horribly wrong that it must be "fixed" before he goes home from the hospital because, *GASP*, what if someone was to see it intact?!  The HORROR!!!

How about this holiday season, you leave your son's penis alone.  Give him the gift of a whole, intact body. Your son's "package" came perfectly wrapped, exactly as it was designed to be. It's a gift that keeps on giving all throughout his life, and one that he'll never grow out of.  (Which is more than I can say about that ugly sweater...)

Christmas sweater...see what I mean?!

Circumstupidity And The Comebacks I Use.

So yes, I have seen my fair share of "circumstupidity" online.  So much, in fact, that it gave me exactly what I needed for this post.  Every statement you see here in black is something I have read somewhere online.

**Sensitivity warning**  If you've circumcised your son and are not at a place yet where you can read truthful (but blunt) responses to the excuses I have heard/read people use for why they cut their sons, maybe this post isn't for you.

Classic!
"I cut my son because I prefer my sexual partner to be circumcised."
UH....WHAT?!  Unless you're planning on having sex with your own son, this makes no sense.  (And, by the way, if you're planning on having sex with your son, you're a sick freak and need to call the cops and report yourself right now.)

"If you love your son you'll circumcise him."
*Blank stare*  So...if I love him I'll let someone take him from the safety of my arms and put him in a cold plastic circumstraint in a position that hurts his back, strap his arms and legs down, fondle his penis until it is erect, then proceed to tear his foreskin from the glans, crush it, then cut it off?  Oh, and lets not forget that during this he'll be screaming and thrashing his head back and forth, or he'll go into shock and lay there un-moving.  There's no medical reason to circumcise babies...it's why no Health Organizations recommend it.  (The Canadian Pediatric Society actually point out that the risks outweigh the "potential" benefits!)  Yeah.  That's love.
I actually prefer to show my son I love him by PROTECTING him from pain.  Crazy, I know.

"You don't know what it's like to be a guy.  I'm glad I'm circumcised."
Yeah, well you don't know what it's like to be intact.  So, since you don't really have anything to compare it to, I guess you can SAY you're glad...but you can't really know, can you?  I'm sorry that choice was taken from you without your consent and now you feel the need to justify it.  And I don't need to be a guy to know that hurting babies is wrong.  I just need a soul.

"I was circumcised and I've never had a problem with it."
With what?  Your penis?  Well since about 85% of the world's men are intact, I bet we could find a pretty huge number of men who've never "had a problem" with their penis either, even when they're intact.  Should I give you a medal for washing it?  The truth is that even if you had been left intact, chances are that you would never have "had a problem with it."  And, it's easy to say you've "never had a problem" when you're a 25 yr. old man.  Get back to me when you're 40.  Sadly cut men will have lost a huge amount of sensitivity in their penis by 40 years old.  I don't think that it's a coincidence that 40% of men over 40 have erectile dysfunction.  (You can help get that sensitivity back by restoring.  You can learn more about it HERE and HERE.)

"Circumcision has kept me from getting a UTI."
Oh good.  Heaven forbid you were to have to take 10 days worth of antibiotics to clear up an infection.  It's definitely better that you had a body part amputated.  And I'm sorry, but if you can wash your genitals, chances are you would never have gotten one in the first place.  If you want that medal now, I'll go grab it.
The numbers for UTIs in boys who have not been circumcised is 1 in 100.  It is highly uncommon for boys to ever get a UTI in the first place, in the absence of an abnormality of the urinary tract.  Girls are MUCH more likely to get a UTI, and no one ever suggests we cut their genitals.

"Women don't want a man with a flap of skin on the end of his dick."
Um...funny...I'm pretty sure that any woman that knows the function of foreskin would be pretty freakin thrilled if their man was intact.  We love our cut men for who they are, but don't think for a second that we're happy our men were strapped down and mutilated as infants.  We're not.
The penis slides in and out of it's own sheath when a man is intact.  When a man has a circumcised penis, they are going at you like a battering ram (or, as it's been referred to in the past, "jabbing at you like a broom handle").  An intact man doesn't need lube, and he doesn't need to spit in his hand.  Those are things done by cut men.

"But circumcision prevents HIV."
Oh really?  Huh.  Amazing stuff.  Uh, NO IT DOESN'T.  Cutting 3/4 of an infant's penile skin off does NOT give it super powers.  The WHO, UNAIDS and the CDC have endorsed circumcision as HIV prevention in ADULT CONSENTING MEN who have multiple partners in HIV hot spots in AFRICA. NONE of these organizations have endorsed infant circumcision, nor are there any studies involving men circumcised as infants. There is no evidence that infant circumcision prevents HIV, quite the opposite; despite 80% of American men being circumcised at birth, HIV transmission rates are many times higher than countries in Europe and Asia where circumcision is rare.
One theory of why circumcised men are in fact more likely to spread the HIV virus is because of the lack of foreskin.  As I mentioned above, the penis of an intact man slides in and out of it's own sheath, protecting the genitals of both partners from tiny tears caused by the friction of the penis as it's rammed in and out.  An intact man does not cause that same friction.   The foreskin acts as a protective barrier to the genitals of both partners, preventing the tiny skin tears.

"A boy should look like his father."
This is my biggest pet peeve.  How can someone seriously say this with a straight face?!
Is the father of this child planning on spending a lot of time comparing penises with your son?  I'm going to assume your hubby is normal and say that's NEVER going to happen.
Are you afraid that you're son is going to see your partner naked and realize that compared to his daddy's penis, his has something extra?  Are you afraid you're going to have to explain to your son why he was left intact, while your spouse is not?  Don't worry about it.  Tell him that when your hubby was a baby, they thought it was cleaner and had to be done.  Now we know better.  We know that there are no medical reasons to do it, so you left him just as perfect as he was the day he was born.  His foreskin isn't a birth defect, and it didn't need to be removed.
I think that conversation is going to be easier than the one you're going to have if you circumcise him and he finds out that you let someone cut off the end of his penis without his consent when he was just newly born into this world.

And here's a little more common sense...What if your spouse was missing an arm?  Should your son also have an arm removed at birth?  You want them to match, right?  What if your son is born with red hair, and your hubby is blond?  Then what?  They're not going to match.
But it's okay.  Don't panic.  Your son is NOT your partner...not only that, he's a whole separate person!  An individual.  He doesn't need to be a clone of your man to be perfect.  He was born that way...with all of his parts.  And they share DNA.  Isn't that enough?!

"I was circumcised and I don't remember it, so it's okay."
Honestly, failing to have vivid memories of an event in childhood does not mean it never happened.  At that time it is very real to that baby.  To him, it's a horrible, traumatizing event that never should have taken place.
It's harsh, but what if someone raped a coma patient?  Would it be okay because she couldn't remember it when she woke up?  NO.  Of course not.  What if someone punched that baby?  When it grows up it's not going to remember that happening.  So is it okay because the memory won't last their whole lifetime?  NO.  Of course it's not okay!!!
And it's the same with circumcision.  Failing to remember it as an adult does not excuse the fact that it was done.  It does not excuse the fact that pain was inflicted on a newborn baby.  It does not suddenly make it okay.  The inability to remember the event as an adult does not make the act that took place as a child, irrelevant.

"Not circumcising your son deprives him of a right of passage to becoming a man."
He's not a man.  He's a baby.  If he wants to get himself circumcised as an adult, that's his own business.  I doubt he will, though.  The average number of men who choose circumcision for themselves are 1 in 500.  Foreskin contains over 20,000 fine touch nerve endings, and feels GREAT to both him and his sexual partner.  He'll also probably not want to remove his eyelids either.  Just sayin'.

"Men complain so much, it's easier to get them cut as babies so we don't have to listen to them whine."
The inability to use language does not mean that the baby wants his penis cut.  He can't talk as an adult man can, so he will be unable to put into words his pain or fear.  But I assure you that a grown man will be in less pain than his newborn counterpart.  He will get powerful meds to deal with the after-pains of surgery.  He will also not have to be awake with next to no pain relief during the procedure.  He will not have to feel his foreskin being torn from his glans like a new baby does.
A grown man knows what he's getting into, and can give informed consent.  An infant is helpless and at the mercy of his parents.
If you think a grown man can't handle the surgery, how do you think a newborn baby can handle it?

"My son will never get head if he's not circumcised."
How about you let your ADULT son make the choice for himself whether or not he wants to be circumcised.  If he really truly thinks he's going to be getting so much head if he's circumcised that he's willing to put his life and penis on the line for it, then at least it will be his OWN choice.
For the time being, when your son is an infant, how about you just worry about taking care of him and keeping him safe from harm.  No one is going to be giving him head for a very long time, so having foreskin isn't going to change that.
And I won't even get into talking about how disturbing it is for me when people talk about their infant son in a sexual way like this...

"I'm a Christian.  God wanted me to circumcise my son."
Yeah?  Where did it say that?  I'm confused, you see, because I know for a fact that God did not tell YOU to circumcise your son!  Sorry.  Here is a site that will explain it to you.  If that doesn't help you, there's THIS one.If that's not enough for you, maybe this will be:

The Bible says that God pronounced creation 'very good' (Genesis 1:31) and that humans were made in the image of God (Genesis 1:27). The Apostle Paul also said that God made every part of the body as he wanted it. (1 Corinthians 12:18).
"Behold, I, Paul, tell you that if you be circumcised, Christ will be of no advantage to you."  (Galatians 5:2)

"And even those who advocate circumcision don't really keep the whole law.  They only want you to be circumcised so they can brag about it and claim you as their disciples."  (Galatians 6:13)

What did Jesus think about circumcision?
His disciples said to him:  Is circumcision useful or not?  He said to them:  If it were useful, the father would beget them from their mother (already) circumcised.  But the one true circumcision in the Spirit has proved useful in every way.  (Thomas 53)

The Apostolical Canons of the Church state:
Canon XXII
"He who has mutilated himself, cannot become a clergyman, for he is a self-murderer, and an enemy to the workmanship of God."

Canon XXIV
"If a layman mutilate himself, let him be excommunicated for three years, as practicing against his own life".

Circumcision was practiced as a way to remove our own fleshly nature, which was fulfilled in the resurrection of Christ, and which the sacrament of baptism teaches us to look forward to in our own resurrection.
"Watch out for for those wicked men-- dangerous dogs, I call them-- who say you must be circumcised to be saved.  For it isn't the cutting of our bodies that make us children of God; it is worshiping him with our spirits."  (Phillipians 3: 2-3)

God doesn't make mistakes, and hasn't made a mistake giving EVERY healthy boy a foreskin.  Man's design will never be better than God's design, and it is only from self-pride, and ignorance, that human beings believe that cutting their newborn baby boy's genitals could possibly be what God wanted.  If God wanted baby boys to be without foreskin, they'd be born that way.  Don't fall for the lies and tricks told to you by people who are looking to make a very quick buck from the pain and mutilation of a perfectly functioning body part.

"He's MY son, so it's MY choice."

Well, if he's your son, for whatever reason it IS legally your choice.  But realistically, it's not your body and shouldn't be your choice to alter it for non-medical reasons.  Circumcision is an elective, cosmetic procedure.  Your doctor will tell you that.
No other cosmetic procedure can be done to an un-consenting person...to do so is illegal.  By all rights, circumcision is an illegal procedure being practiced legally.  If your baby was born with a long nose, the Dr. and family members would look at you like you were crazy if you said you were going to take him in for rhinoplasty at 2 days old.
If your son decides for himself (as an adult) to be circumcised, at least he'll have been given the right to choose for himself.

"I don't want my son to be a cheese-dick."

Classy.  If you can teach him to wash his hands and face, you can teach him to wash his penis.  And last time I checked, no one had to FORCE a teenage boy to touch his penis in the shower or tub.  Just tell him while he's at it, rinse it off, he'll be just fine!
This excuse actually says more about the parents than the child...they're assuming he'll be so stupid he can't manage to rinse off his own penis.  And that's sad, really.  I can't imagine being born into a family that, from the moment I'm born, has already decided that I will never be able to do basic things for myself, like washing my genitals.

"My best friend's neighbor's uncle died of penile cancer, so we circumcised him so he wouldn't get it too."
This year in the United States more than 1600 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer.  An estimated 500 men will die from it.  (Find more HERE.)

The most recent American Cancer Society estimates for penile cancer in the United States are for 2011:
About 1,360 new cases of penile cancer will be diagnosed.  About 320 men will die from it.
As you can see, your son has a higher chance of getting (and dying from) breast cancer than he has of getting (or dying from) penile cancer.  I'm sure you're not going to have his breast tissue removed at birth to "prevent breast cancer", so to do the same with his foreskin to "prevent" a disease that affects less than 1% of men, is just madness!  If we removed every body part that "could" become cancerous in our lifetime, we would be left with little more than a pile of hair and fingernails.

Everyone is welcome to their own opinion about circumcision, this is a free country, and it's not illegal yet.  But they are NOT welcome to their own facts.  Sometimes the truth hurts, but it doesn't change the fact that it's the truth.

Never be afraid to tell the truth.  Even if your voice shakes.  Even if you're the only one speaking up.  After a while your voice will be strong, and your message will be heard loud and clear.

This Is Tough Work

You know, I had no idea before I became an "intactivist" (2nd definition is perfect!) that there were these wonderful people out there that spent their time and money trying to educate people about the facts surrounding circumcision.  I didn't know that anyone would care enough about another person's child's bodily integrity that they would actually speak up and tell those parents the truth.  I thought it was pretty much a parent's choice, and that everyone else felt that way too.  And to be completely honest, I didn't think there was much choice involved, even from the parents.  I thought it was something people just did.

Since having my own son (and daughter, lets not forget about Eewie...they both did enter our family the same day), and having to listen to those babies in the NICU screaming...since making a choice to let him choose for himself, my world has opened up.  I've learned that people can, and DO speak up when they see parents making uninformed decisions about their child's bodies.  I have learned that it's really a lot more than just a handful of concerned nurses who are speaking out.  It's regular people.  Like me.  Like you.  And a lot of them were probably people who were also raised believing that it was just something you do.  Or that father and son need matching penises.  Or they believed that cutting a part of their son's genitals off would somehow give it super powers and protect their son from STDs (including HIV).  It's amazing how a little education can change things so drastically.

During the last week I've had to see (and be part of) some very upsetting things go down in the name of "intactivism".  I've seen a beautiful and strong genital autonomy activist deal with crap I wouldn't wish on anyone, just because she extended her hand to help a family who posted openly on a social networking site about their son's upcoming circumcision.  They claimed he had phimosis, yet was still only a very young child (I believe they said he was 2 1/2, so it's not phimosis, it's NORMAL fusion.)  The people she tried to help went on to attack her, and steal her profile picture...  It was a mess.  All because she was trying to do a good thing and save both them, and that little boy, the pain of an unnecessary surgery.

I have personally had to deal with some high school drama because I refused to turn my head and ignore racist, bigoted, ignorant comments from a fellow "intactivist".  The day I allow things like that to go on without standing up and calling them on it, is the day I'm under the dirt.  And so, because I stood up for what was right, it made me a little bit unpopular with some of the "in" crowd.

The truth is that I firmly believe that I would rather fight for what's right ALONE, than to fight in a group surrounded by people, and always have to look over my shoulder to make sure none of them are wielding a knife aimed at my back.

No less than 3 days before that bullshit, a woman who I've had on my friends list for close to a year (we met in my twins group on Facebook), had both of her twin boys circumcised.  Even though I sent her a shitload of information.  Even though more than once she thanked me for the info and told me that she was glad that someone was speaking up and telling her that it didn't NEED to be done...no one had ever approached her about it  before, and she thought it was "just something people did."  I had a lot of hope in her...a lot of faith that she would read these articles, look at all of the information, and protect her sons.  Instead she posted photos of herself with a huge clown-sized smile, from the hospital...as her sons were being prepped for surgery.  (They went from having "phimosis", to "chordee", to "hypospadias".)  I have a feeling what they actually had was a mother who didn't want to explain to her 4 other sons why the twins were left intact and they weren't, and a Dr. who was willing to say whatever he had to say to get the foreskin off of those boys.

As it turned out, there were at least two other women who had been trying to save these boys from that woman.  And as much as people don't want to say it, I don't know now if we ever had a chance of saving them.  Even as a born-again Christian, she seems to think that her and that foreskin-hunter Dr. of hers know better than God.  Please explain that one to me.

So this week my feelings of solidarity in my intactivism were kind of shaken.  And even one of our very strongest, most influential mommas had enough and took a break.  I just read her post yesterday, after starting this one, and you know, if nothing else, it made me feel just a little less alone.

When people get to the point in their lives that they feel that THEY are the most important "intactivist" out there, they need a reality check.  And when those of us fighting the same battle decide to turn on each other, it weakens us all as a unit.  We shouldn't have to worry that other people on our team are talking behind our backs, or scheming against us.  But we do, because it's a very sad reality.  What we need to be doing is supporting each other, holding each other up when things get tough, and celebrating with each other when thing are going well.  I wish I saw more of that.  Sometimes all we need is to know we're not alone.  And I love when I see us work together as a unit, working towards something.  It reminds me of when I first got into this.  It reminds me of how it's supposed to be.

I'll never stay quiet when a baby is born to parents that think his foreskin is "just a little skin".  I'll never worry more about my popularity than I do about human rights.  I'll never apologize to an adult for looking out for the best interests of a child.  And I'll never throw my hands up and walk away forever...though I WILL take a break when I need to, as often as I need to.  Sometimes a few days being surrounded by the people in my life who I love, and who love me for exactly who I am, is just what I need...what my SOUL needs.  Because even though the people I am supposed to be fighting WITH, sometimes forget we're all on the same team (or perhaps forget that we're all actually human beings behind our computer screens), and all have things going on in our real lives, and we don't need their crap too.  And, for that reason, I won't add to the insanity.  I have hit an emotional limit.  If I want to be able to help people, I need to be strong myself.  And as my son says, I need to "fill my gas tank".  (Only I need mine filled with hugs and kisses, not freezies.)

I will stand up and fight for the HUMAN RIGHTS of others.  I don't care if you're still inside of your mother, or laying on your death bed.  I don't care if you live here, or half a world away.  I don't care if you love someone who is the same sex as you are, or if you love a person of another gender.  I don't care if your skin is light, dark, or somewhere in between.  I don't care if you wear a cross or a hajib.  I don't care if you pray to a god, or if you don't believe in a god at all.  If your human rights are in question, I am your girl.  I will stand up for you, fight with you, and speak out.  Doing the right thing is never wrong.
So, this post is for all of the people out there, fighting for what's right. I know all too well that this isn't as easy as people might think. I know that there are times that it would be easier to be quiet, and worry only about our own lives. I know it might be easier to ignore what's going on around us, and pretend we don't know what's being done to these babies in our silence. And I do understand that there are always going to be people who say ignorant comments about other religious groups. But I can't ignore it, and won't apologize...I'm doing what's right, and if that makes me unpopular, SO BE IT.  No one ever said this was going to be easy.  To those in this with me, I want  you to know that I was searching for a picture of a guardian angel, but could only find one with a female angel...and I know a good part of you are male.  But I do see all of you that way.  Watching over the ones that can't speak for themselves.  And the majority of the time, I'm proud to be one of you.

"Let me not pray to be sheltered from dangers, but to be fearless in facing them. Let me not beg for the stilling of my pain, but for the heart to conquer it." Rabindranath Tagore

Non-Circumcision Consent Form

Copy the form below and present it to all the health care personnel who will come into contact with your baby after he is born-but do it well in advance of the birth. Most doctors, out of justifiable fears of lawsuits, will not circumcise a child if either parent objects. But you must make your objection very clear, especially if your partner favors circumcision or doesn't consider it very important one way or the other.

Caring For An Intact Penis

Since there seems to be so much MIS-INFORMATION on how to care for an intact penis, here's some instruction from the Canadian Paediatric Society:

And I quote:

http://www.caringforkids.cps.ca/pregnancybabies/Circumcision.htm

Caring for an uncircumcised penis:

The foreskin covers the shaft and head (glans) of a boy’s penis. During the early years of a boy’s life, the foreskin separates from the glans. This is a natural process that occurs over time. You do not need to do anything to make it happen.

When the foreskin separates, it is said to be “retractable,” meaning it can be pulled back.

An uncircumcised penis is easy to keep clean and requires no special care:

•Keep your baby’s penis clean by gently washing the area during his bath. Do not try to pull back the foreskin. Usually, it is not fully retractable until a boy is 3 to 5 years old, or even until after puberty. Never force it. (Clean it like a finger, wipe and you're done.)

•When your son is old enough, teach him to keep his penis clean as you’re teaching him how to keep the rest of his body clean. (Some worry about their "dirty" teenager not properly caring for their intact penis...I ask you this; Have you ever had to tell your teenage son to touch his penis in the bath or shower? Uh...no. While he's at it, he can wipe it down.)

•When the foreskin separates, skin cells will be shed and new ones will develop to replace them. These dead skin cells will work their way down the penis through the tip of the foreskin and may look like white, cheesy lumps. These are called smegma. If you see them under the skin, you don’t need to force them out. Just wipe them away once they come out.

•When the foreskin is fully retractable, teach your son to wash underneath it each day.

It's as simple as it sounds. Keeping it clean will prevent infection...just like every other part of your son's body!!! It's not necessary to cut off anything to prevent a possible infection.

Our Job Is To Protect Them!

I'm not much of a back-rubber. I speak the truth and try to say it in a way that is without judgement, but I have no ability to sugarcoat things. Facts are facts. I just say it like it is. I've always been that way. When it comes to circumcision, I have even less ability to sugarcoat the facts. I think that saying anything other than the complete truth is no better than promoting it. People NEED to know the truth. Perhaps if they knew the entire truth, all the facts, without someone saying "but you know, dear, in the end it's YOUR choice", (because it's NOT your choice...unless it's YOUR OWN penis) maybe less babies would have to go through this trauma and mutilation of something that was JUST FINE in the first place. An intact penis isn't broken, so you don't need to "fix it". Leave it alone!

Even deeper than the actual mutilation part of the whole subject is the issue of protecting our young. How someone can say that they love their child, and then pass their newborn to a nurse so he can have his foreskin ripped from the end of his penis, clamped down, and cut off...how on EARTH can that be love?! Your instinct tells you that it's wrong. Your instinct tells you to grab your son and RUN. How can anyone ignore their instinct for reasons like "it's cleaner", or "we want him to look like his daddy"?! (It's NOT cleaner, and no one is going to ask for a penis comparison to prove their relationship!)

Our job is to protect our children from harm. Our job is to get them through this life safely. We are supposed to teach them to trust and love and do good... How do we do that when the day after they're born they're whisked away, screaming for their momma, only to be strapped to a table against their will and have the most sensitive part of their body cut off for NO LOGICAL REASON?! How do we teach them to trust when right after being born they were forsaken by the one person who should be willing to die before allowing harm come to their baby? How can we teach them to love when the love they have been shown is one that allows torture for cosmetic reasons? How do we teach them to do good when we don't do good by them? Children are a product of their environment. When we hurt them, they hurt others. When we protect them, they feel safe, and in turn will go on to protect others.

What is sad is that sometimes it takes the mutilation of a once-perfect little boy for a mother to REALIZE that she perhaps shouldn't have let that happen. (Mis-information is one thing. Knowing you were doing wrong and allowing it to happen is another.)

This is a discussion where hundreds of moms post their stories of circumcision regret. It was found on Mothering.com.

The only thing that irritates me more than someone who circumcises their son even though they know the facts is someone who BRAGS about it. As though they are somehow good parents for letting someone remove a perfectly functional piece of their baby's body. I wonder if they'd also brag if it had been the eyelids that they had removed? Or if had been their daughter that had been circumcised? Somehow I have to think that anyone who is proud of tearing (, clamping, and cutting) away the choice of how their son wants his OWN penis to look, is just a straight up asshole. I bet they WOULD brag about circumcising their daughter. I feel bad for a child in that family because their parents overlook the science that clearly shows circumcision is 100% unnecessary, and allow him to be mutilated based on their own opinions. (Damned stupid science always trying to teach us things!) I will not post a link to these types of discussions because when I read them, it makes my blood BOIL. The cutters need no more promotion than they give themselves.

I will just end this by saying that there are also men who resent their parents for never giving them a choice as to whether or not they were allowed to stay intact or not. To me that is just so so sad. It wasn't something they would have chosen for themselves...and they have only their parents to thank for that. What parents are never told is that one day, when your son becomes a man, he has the right to sue you and to sue the Dr. for the violation of his human rights. What you once thought was your choice can become very much become a lawsuit.

Instinct has kept us alive this long. Don't ignore it when your gut tells you that it's wrong to allow a man to strap your infant to a board, fondle him to an erection, rip the skin from the head of his penis only then to cut it, clamp it and then cut it off completely. There are no excuses for this. Instinct has a purpose...funny...so does foreskin!

Circumcision Myths and Facts

I'm sure we've all heard our fair share of bullshit when it comes to why circumcision "should" be performed on infants. I'm going to bust the top off the can of crap and tell you the myths, and give you the facts. I'm not trying to judge anyone who circumcised their son(s) based on misinformation. What I'm doing is making sure that it doesn't happen again. Sometimes a little bit of information goes a long way.

Myth #1: "A boy should look like his father"

This is by far the most annoying excuse for male genital mutilation that I have ever heard in my life, and it makes me so angry. The truth is, no one is going to ask your husband and your son to drop their pants in order to determine their relationship status.  "Oh, they match. Must be father and son." Uh, yeah. Not likely. My son has red hair and brown eyes. My husband has blonde hair and blue eyes. Should I dye my son's hair and pluck out his eyes and give him blue glass eyes so he can "look like his father"? How is it any different than cutting off the end of his penis for the same reason? Both would be removing perfectly normal, functional parts of the body in order to make a boy "look like" his daddy.

If your husband is so concerned with your son's penis looking like his own, you have to ask yourself two things...first, why is he so threatened by his son's penis? Babies are born with foreskin to protect the sensitive glans (head) of his penis. If your husband is circumcised, I have to wonder if perhaps he's afraid that he may find out that his own penis is in fact, missing something. Does it threaten his manhood to realize that??

Secondly, you have to ask yourself if your husband may be trying to find a way to deal with his own mutilation...to do this to his son would be showing the world that he is okay, that it wasn't that bad, and that it didn't emotionally scar him. but THEN you have to ask yourself why he would feel the need to do this to his son if he was not emotionally scarred by it? It seems to me that a man who does this to his son does it because he feels that he has to. It hides his pain of being "fixed", because clearly he was not born perfect if that was done to "correct" what was not perfect about him. It's sad that they not only do this to infants, but almost immediately after birth...as though the boy has something so shamefully wrong with him that it needs to be corrected before anyone else is subjected to it.

The fact is that fathers and sons share DNA. Isn't that enough? Do they also have to share the scar of ignorance for the rest of their lives?

Myth #2: "It's cleaner"

Do you have access to water? That's all you need to clean it. It's a mucus membrane and does not even require soap. Simply clean what's seen on your infant...wipe it like a finger. When the foreskin is retractable, it's just a matter of pulling the skin back (which should only be done by the person who owns the penis), giving it a quick wipe with a wet cloth and you're off to the races. It takes less time than washing your hands after you use the restroom... and you certainly wouldn't cut your hands off in order to save yourself from having to spend that time cleaning them, right?

More information of how to care for an intact penis can be found here.

And the fact is that the foreskin is there to protect. It protects the glans of the penis from many things...one of those is from the feces and urine in your child's diaper, which burns their freshly peeled penis. If you've heard the screams of a newly circumcised boy, you cannot deny that their urine and feces cause them enormous pain. It hurts them every time you have to peel the diaper away from their penis. I have heard the shrieks they make when their diapers are changed and it's not a normal cry. It's the most horrible sound I've ever heard. Don't let anyone tell you to retract it. It will detach itself from the glans over time. Often children retract it themselves, and who better to do it than the person who owns it?!

Myth #3: "It will need to be removed later in life"

I've heard a lot of nonsense lately about men who, late in life, find themselves with reoccurring infections. Which makes me wonder...how is it that he can blame his foreskin for these infections?? Honestly, if a grown man cannot wash his own penis, he has bigger problems than I can deal with. Maybe instead of just being circumcised and removing the foreskin, he should cut his entire penis off. That'd prevent any more infections for sure. Seems to me if he needs some lessons on hygiene.

Removing a functional piece of the body to "prevent" things that may or may not ever happen, is just plain crazy. We do not remove a baby girl's breast buds to "prevent" breast cancer later in life. We do not cut off the toes to prevent a possible infection caused by ingrown nails. Anyone with common sense would say that either of those things would be ridiculous. But we routinely cut off the end of a baby boy's penis to "prevent" things...things that are VERY unlikely to even occur!

Also, if he decides to be circumcised as an adult there will be two MAJOR differences. One being that the choice would be HIS. An adult is put to sleep for the procedure, and given powerful pain meds to deal with the post op. pain. As an adult, he would know what to expect, and would be able to consent to this. None of these things are done for our baby boys.

The second major difference is that as an adult, there is no need to rip the foreskin from the glans of the penis. It will have already come apart on it's own over time.

Myth #4: "When he's old, he will get infections because of his foreskin not being cleaned properly in a nursing home."

I have read comments online about how baby boys should be circumcised because when they're old and living in a nursing home, the nurses don't retract their foreskin to clean under it, and they are subjected to numerous infections. This however, is not a circumcision issue. This is a health care issue. My own mother was a nurse for years, and often told me stories of retracting a resident's foreskin and finding that no one else had done that in what looked like EVER. So although SOME nurses do fail to properly care for their patients, not all do. And when this generation of boys are rocking out in the old folks home, they'll almost all be in good company. As it is now, many older gentlemen are not intact. It was such a common misconception in their day that a large number were circumcised. But now things are looking up. Canada's statistic for boys left intact in 2009 was 90.8% (according to the Canadian Institute for Health Information). In the US, according to the CDC, 67.5% of boys remained intact in 2009. The nurses that will be caring for OUR sons will be responsible for caring for the MAJORITY who are still intact. They will be better equipped to care for an intact penis better than the ones today. And as I stated, it's a health CARE issue...if we make sure our family members are being properly taken care of, this will not be an issue.

Myth #5: "It looks better"

No. It doesn't. An intact penis is a NORMAL penis. That is what they're supposed to look like. Only after years of misinformation have we come to see a cut, circumcised penis as normal. It is most certainly not normal. Considering the fact that we don't know what we're missing when we've never had it, I assure you that after a sexual encounter with an intact man, you will see the difference for yourself and soon come to LOVE the look of an intact penis.
I have another thought on this. When a mother tells me that SHE prefers the look of a circumcised penis, it takes me aback. Why would a mother want her son's penis to look the way she prefers her sexual partner's penis to look?! Creepy, isn't it? How about you step away from his penis and let him decide for himself how he wants his penis to look...unless of course you plan on having sex with your son... See?! Creepy!

Myth #6: "It prevents HIV"

No it doesn't. Studies have shown that there is more likely hood of a man contracting HIV if he is circumcised, due to the fact that the chafing that occurs can cause tiny tears along the shaft of the penis. An intact penis does not have this happen, as it is protected by the sheath of skin, and it prevents chafing. The ONLY two things that can PREVENT the transmission of HIV is the regular use of condoms, or just not having sex at all. (That last one is a SURE FIRE WAY of preventing it! LOL!) The truth is that the US has the highest number of circumcised men in the world. They also have the highest HIV rate. What does that tell you? It tells me that the proof is in the pudding.

Myth #7: "Everyone does it. I don't want my son to look "different" in the locker room."

As I stated above, in Canada, close to 91% of male babies were left intact in 2009. Your son will NOT be the minority in the change room. I'm not sure exactly how much "penis peeking" is going on in there as it is, but even if your son is confronted by a cut peer, he has the ability to say that his parents never paid someone to cut off the end of his penis. His is all there.

Myth #8: "It prevents penile cancer"

If we removed tissue for fear of one day getting cancer, we'd be left with very little. The chances of getting penile cancer are 1 in 100,000. Not a very good reason to amputate a functioning body part. You have a much higher risk of getting lung cancer (1 in 13), breast cancer (1 in 7), prostate cancer (1 in 6), colon and rectum cancer (1 in 17). Do we remove lungs, breasts, prostates, colons or rectums at birth to prevent the cancers we are MUCH more likely to get? No. Because that would be crazy. Yet this is always one reason people state when they try to justify cutting their sons. This information can be found HERE.

How I Became An Intactivist

Get your intactivist gear here.

I am very proudly an intactivist. My son is the first in our family to remain perfect. Whole. Intact. The violence of male genital mutilation ends with my husband. But it hasn't always been my opinion. Here's how it happened.

My twins were born 10 weeks early (at 30 weeks and 2 days gestation) due to PPROM, and spent 8 1/2 weeks in the NICU in London, Ontario. They were born at 3 lbs., 14 oz., and 2 lbs., 12 oz. My son was born first, and though he was breathing when he came out, had severe apnea for the first 7 weeks of his life. My daughter was born 5 minutes later, and was not breathing when she came out. After my son was born, their placentas (they'd fused) came out behind him. My daughter was inside of me for five minutes with no oxygen. As soon as my son was born, the nurses started forcing me to use the laughing gas...now, looking back on it, I know that it was an attempt to keep me calm when they told me she had died. But she didn't die! She lived!!! She had to have a breathing tube through her nose and into her lungs for 3 days, and then was able to breathe on her own. They gave her a shot of surfactant to keep her immature lungs from sticking together, and my husband refers to that shot as "a shot of perfect". After her breathing tube came out, my daughter only had minor health issues along the way, the most major being her slow growth.

But my son, he was another story. Even though he weighed over a pound more than his sister, he was by far the weaker twin. He not only had apnea, but also bradycardias, and at 8 days old he ended up getting sepsis caused by his "long line" IV. I got a call at 4am telling me that we needed to get there as soon as we could, to be with him. They never expected him to live, but never ever uttered those words. I had never seen anything like that in my life. He was grey, and his skin was literally hanging off of him. Some of it would lay on the little pad he was laying on. He would not respond to my voice, as he'd always done before. He wouldn't move when I touched him. I sat next to his incubator and I prayed. I have NEVER prayed so hard or so fast in all my life. I just prayed that God would give us a chance to be that little boy's parents. I promised that if he lived that I would protect him, and love him more than anyone had ever loved another person. Ever. For two or three days, it was touch and go. At any point the infection in his blood could have killed him. He was given a lumbar puncture to drain some of the spinal fluid so they could test it for meningitis. They only told me that if he did in fact have meningitis, it would "not be good". They pumped him full of every kind of antibiotic that he could take...and they gave him the highest dose they could possibly give him for his weight. I never cried in front of him. I wanted him to think that I knew he would be okay. I wanted him to see me be strong so that he would be strong too. I didn't want him to ever think for a second that things wouldn't work out. They HAD TO.

On the fourth day, I knew he was getting better the second I saw him. He opened his eyes, and he smiled at me. I know. I know what everyone says, they can't smile when they're that young. It is gas. But it wasn't gas. My boy looked at me and he smiled. And I had to almost chew my bottom lip off not to cry. I thanked God out loud that day. Thank you for my boy. Thank you for letting us keep him!!!

The 8 1/2 weeks with the twins were the longest and hardest weeks I've ever had to live through. To see my babies fighting to live, to see them so weak and small that they couldn't even drink out of a special preemie nipple on a bottle until they were 7 weeks old...that was rough. (I'll tell you more about it in another post.) We drove to London every single day so I could spend time with them, and even when my husband couldn't stay there with me me, I would have someone else drive me there and drop me off, or my husband would drop me off and someone else would pick me up. One day I spent 16 straight hours there with them because that's just how it worked out. It was my favorite day I had ever spent there. The kids were stable and I got to do almost all of their care. It made me start really feeling like their momma.

When they were there for 6 weeks, I got a call that I had been chosen to live in the hospital's "Care By Parent" unit of the NICU. It is what it sounds like. Instead of them having "care by nurse", I did all of their care. I moved into the hospital with them for the last 16 days. I slept for 3 hours a day because of my paranoia about my son's apnea monitor going off. About a week in, I was crazy from lack of sleep, but I'd do it all over again! I loved that my babies were with me, even if we had to be there.

During that time in the CBP Unit, other moms came in and out with their babies. Most stayed only one or two nights. (They were all born to moms that had diabetes, and needed to be stabilized before going home.) Sadly, every single little boy that entered that unit whole and perfect, left with the end of his penis mutilated. And because the rooms there only had a sheet in place of doors, we could all hear everything that happened in every one of the other rooms. Especially when babies cried. And the sound that those little boys made after being circumcised was HEART WRENCHING. I remember sitting on my bed bawling because I could hear the horrible screams those boys made every single time their diapers were changed. Not once did I not cry.

We had always planned on having our son circumcised. From the start. We even had the $300. put away to have it done. Until I had to hear those screams...

My husband was working shift work while I lived with the kids in the hospital. He would come up and see us every-other night, and would sleep there on the weekends. During one of his visits I told him to bring me the book he was given by the place that checked our car seats...the book had information in it about circumcisions. Before he came back, I found some information (pamphlets) on it in the maternal/child ward. After he brought me the book, and I had time to sit down and look at all the information, I wrote out the pros and cons listed. In the end, it was completely equal. For every pro there was a con, and for every con there was a pro. So it came down to choice. I had to sit with that for a couple of days, because I didn't know if I could CHOOSE to allow someone to hurt my son when there were no real benefits to it. I had promised that I would protect my son and love him more than anyone had ever loved their child if I was allowed to keep him. And the whole thing kept me up. Exhaustion wasn't enough to make me fall asleep when my son's well-being was on the line. It was like my brain was on fire. I had never had to make a decision like this in my life, and my husband still wanted it done.

I prayed about it and went to sleep. When I got up I had to change the kids and feed them, and as I sit there looking at my children, I knew what I had to do. I had to protect them, no matter what. Even if my husband disagreed with me, my job was to be their mother. My job was to put their well-being over everything else. So when the nurse came in to check on us, I asked her about the whole thing. I told her what I had read, and what my opinion was, and even about how the sound of those baby boys crying would make me cry. And she told me that she HATED when people circumcised their sons. She told me that she had done it with her son, and that if she had it to do over again, she wouldn't do it. She told me that at the time, mothers were told that it was the best thing to do...it would prevent infection and that it wasn't even really a choice. She said that after 30+ years of seeing boys go through the NICU, she had learned more than she cared to know about circumcision. As a nurse, it was her job to help these mothers learn to care for their raw penis, and she had spent that entire time listening to the screams of the babies. She said that in her opinion, it was unnecessary, and that if I didn't want it done to my son, she would stand with me when I told my husband. *tear* She saved my son. That nurse left and came back into my room with three more nurses. All four of them told me that they would support my choice not to allow my son to be circumcised. They were all present when I told my husband that our son would be circumcised over my dead body, and that if he touched him in an attempt to do it without my consent, the dead body in the room would be HIS. The nurses stood by and told him the risks involved. They told him how circumcision can make a baby stop eating, and that if he had an apnea on the table, he would have to stay in the hospital for another 7 days without having one. They told him that there would be ZERO chance that it wouldn't happen, because if he held his breath, the monitor would go off, and we'd be staying longer. They said that if he stopped eating, he would stay longer. They told him that because he was premature, his penis was just new, and because we were being discharged before they were even due, we would have up to 4 months to change our minds before it got dangerous. They told him that we could go home and research it further and decide later. With that, he agreed, and we took our son home intact. (I want to say that even though I did not care for those nurses, when it came down to needing their support, they stepped up and did more for me in that last day then anyone had ever done for me in my life. They not only saved me from allowing my son to have his body altered forever against his consent, they also gave me back something I had lost when my children were born way too soon. My power.)

After we went home and time passed, my husband stopped caring that our son was "different" than he was. After a month he told me that he "didn't even notice anymore" that our son was whole. Can you imagine how I would feel right now if we had done that to our son, all because for ONE MONTH my husband was uncomfortable with it?! When my husband stopped caring about it, the topic just went away...it stopped even being an issue.

The overwhelming need to protect my son was the reason I did not allow him to be circumcised. But when I realized that people were doing this to their sons for reasons like wanting him to "look like his father", or because it "will prevent infection"...my mommy instincts kicked into overdrive and my "you won't circumcise MY boy" opinion became "don't you dare circumcise ANY boys!" The more I learned, the more I felt this way. And after seeing a circumcision video, I became an intactivist. I knew it was bad, but I had no idea it could be that bad.
